Deer Resistant

This collection is a work in progress. If a plant I grow is not on this list, it does not mean it is a deer favorite. It just means that I have not researched every plant I grow as thoroughly as I would like to yet. So much depends on context and detail, and resistance to herbivory from deer or other mammals is no different. If I have come across a source that says a plant is deer resistant, I have added it to this list. However, for the most part, young trees and shrubs will absolutely need to be protected from herbivory (and this isn't just about deer) in Maine. I want you to plant trees and shrubs, so I want you to be prepared for that. Chicken wire enclosures are a straightforward, economical way to protect the new planting from larger mammals. Tree wraps and tree guards help prevent girdling. Trees and shrubs can be a significant financial and time investment, so just get used to the protection step as part of planting.
