Sizes available: 2 quart
Basics: zones 5-7, 18-24" x 12-15", part shade, blooms mid-late spring in red and pink tones, occasionally white, above quilted lettuce-green leaves, does very well in consistently moist soils and will eventually fade away without them.
Common names: Candelabra Primrose, Japanese Cowslip, Queen of Primroses, Valley Red
Family: Primulaceae
Origin/Distribution: P. japonica is native to Hokkaido, Honshu, and Kyushu in Japan and the Kuril Islands
Habitat: The species is found in and at the edges of mountain streams. Not kidding about consistent moisture.
More: This is a beautiful flowering plant given the right conditions. Because it usually develops three tiers of flowers from the bottom up, it has a very long-blooming presence in the garden. As long as it is getting regular water, its leaves remain freshly bright green well into summer.
