Collection: On the Shadier Side

I have quite a bit to write about light requirements, but until that happens, here is a useful list for your shadier areas. Almost none of these plants will grow well in deep shade under a conifer. Morning sun can be similar to part shade, dappled shade, or high and light shade. Spring ephemerals want deciduous shade, ie: spring sunshine with a more closed canopy as the season progresses. Light is accumulative. Other things to keep in mind are that many plants can grow in a variety of light conditions, but they will grow differently, perhaps a more open or rangy shape. They may flower less and they may need less water. So, I also suggest reading each plant description for further details.

What I will say right now is that plants want to grow and will grow in surprising places, often where humans did not think they could manage, so don't get too rule bound. Observe and take note of the specifics of each situation.
