Plants for the Maine Rock Garden

This compilation is for those of you interested in making rock gardens in either sun or shade. It is also a way to design for a low-growing garden without rocks - an approach I think of as tapestry gardening. The alpine plants will be here, and that niche will continue to grow, (and may eventually be a separate collection), but my definition of a rock garden plant includes a broader range of plants than those. We have a lot of rocks and rocky areas in Maine. We might not consider these "rock gardens" in a classic sense, but the conditions can be similar enough to use this collection as a guide to experimentation. There are many Maine native plants that grow on thin, rocky, and shallow soils as well as some with true alpine cred. I look forward to learning more.
