Sizes available: Two quart

Basics: zones 3-8, 18-24" x 18-24", shade to part shade, silvery grey-green fronds, likes a moist woodland soil, slow to develop

Common names: This is a Lady Fern cross.

Family: Woodsiaceae

Origin/Distribution: This fern is a cross between Athyrium felix-femina, Lady Fern and Athyrium niponicum var. pictum, Japanese Painted Fern

Habitat: The favored habitat of Athyriums is shady, moist woodland soils. They are found growing with both hardwoods and conifers, near shaded stream banks, and in damp, forested ravines.

More: This is a lovely fern to add to a shady area for both its texture and coloration. It will slowly creep to form a good-sized clump, but it takes awhile. Elegant for a larger rock garden.

Why grow ferns besides your admiration for a plant that has been present on Earth for over 360 billion years? Ferns support wildlife by creating protective cover and shady, moist micro-habitats, in particular for small mammals and invertebrates. The fuzzy covering on emerging croziers is used by birds for nesting material. Ferns help prevent erosion and filter run-off. For the gardener they offer the gifts of graceful architecture and low-maintenance textural beauty. They are also rabbit, deer, and juglone resistant.
