Hardy to zone 4

After some pondering and speaking with inland gardeners, I decided to make two collections related to hardiness zones lower than zone 5. I am looking forward to serving gardeners in Maine that garden in colder zones than we have on the midcoast. Hardiness zones are not the be all and end all of whether or not a plant will survive the winter in your garden, but they are a good place to start. I am hoping to go into more detail about winter survival, micro climates, pushing zones, etc. in future blog posts.

With respect to zone 4, it might have been easier to make a collection of plants that I offer that are NOT hardy to zone 4, so, if you are a zone 4 gardener, please let your gardening friends know that I am here to help them.

This collection and the Zone 3 collection will also help those of you without dirt in the ground, but the desire to have a garden. Growing perennials, shrubs, and trees in containers is entirely possible in Maine. But selecting the right containers (that don't break in cold weather) and selecting the right plants (hardy to one or two zones lower than yours) are two factors that lead to success. So, take heart, renters! Don't wait. Make a traveling garden that you can take with you.
