Sizes available: 2 quart, coming soon
Basics: zones 4-9, 24-36" x 18-24", full sun to light shade, medium to dark purple blooms over finely-textured foliage from late summer into early fall. Quite adaptable to both brief inundation and periods of drought and prefers a lean, well-drained soil.
Common names: Threadleaf Ironweed, Letterman's Ironweed
Family: Asteraceae
Origin/Distribution: This is a cultivar of the species that was developed by Allan Armitage in his plant trials at the University of Georgia. The species has a very small range and is found in Arkansas and Oklahoma.
Habitat: Occurs in floodplain and riparian habitats as well as rocky, well-drained places
More: Some may say this is the most "garden-worthy" Ironweed and maybe for a classic, ornamental garden this is true. It really just depends. But either way, it is a beautiful, multi-stemmed, bushy presence and because of its refined foliage texture, looks good both in and out of flower which is beneficial, since it does not bloom until late in the season. This is the most drought tolerant Ironweed and will want good drainage in order to cope with winter wet. It is more compact and floriferous than the straight species and may seed around a bit. However, the seeds may not come true to the cultivar. Attractive to pollinators. Good on a sunny slope. I wonder if it will last long in the vase. Stay tuned.
