Common names: New England American-aster, New England Aster
Synonym: Aster novae-angliae
Family: Asteraceae
Origin/Distribution: This plant is present in 6 Canadian Provinces and 42 states. In the U.S. it is native from Maine to South Carolina and west to the eastern Great Plains. Also present in the mountains of Wyoming, Colorado, and New Mexico and has naturalized elsewhere.
Habitat: Found in moist meadows, on woodland edges and stream banks, and in damp ditches, however, is adaptable to some drought.
More: A classic fall-bloomer and significant larval host (more specifics to follow). A strong grower that provides late season nectar and makes a lovely cut flower. A field of Goldenrods and New England Asters is a sight to behold. The root has been used medicinally. More information coming soon.
