Basics: zone 4-8, 12-24" x 12-24", full sun to part shade, four-petaled flowers from pale to medium. purply-pink with long yellow stamens bloom in summer at the tops of the plants, likes consistently wet sandy and gravelly soils with a pH on the low side.

Common names: Virginia Meadow-beauty, Handsome-harry

Family: Melastomataceae

Origin/Distribution: Occurs from Nova Scotia west into New York all the way to Wisconsin and south to Texas and northern Florida. This plant occurs in 33 states and is native to Maine.

Habitat: Prefers acidic, damp ground, low spots in meadows. sandy shorelines.

More: Good for pond edges, rain gardens, wet to moist spots with acidic soil and not too much organic matter. I think a nice combination would be Rhexia virginica, Penthorum sedoides and Coreopsis rosea.
