Sizes available: TBD
Basics: zones 4-9, 2-5' x 1-2', full sun, fragrant, pale pink flowers on long wands in late spring to early summer, wants well-drained, lean, gravelly soils. Is drought tolerant once established and does not like winter wet.
Common names: Palmer's Penstemon, Scented Beardtongue
Family: Plantaginaceae
Origin/Distribution: Native to the western United States from Southern California to Arizona and Utah.
Habitat: Found in high altitude deserts on washes and grasslands.
More: I love the western Penstemons. Our cold weather is not the challenge, but too much wetness at the crown in winter will cause them to languish. So, site on well-drained spots and grow them hard. No need to fertilize or embellish the planting hole. Raising the crown a little proud of the soil line can also help. Penstemons, in general, are both deer and rabbit resistant as well as drought tolerant. They are adaptable to all but poorly drained soils. They make good cut flowers, both in bloom and seeds. Long-tongued pollinators are avid visitors.
