Origin/Distribution: native to eastern and central North America and has naturalized in parts of the Pacific Northwest
Habitat: wet meadows and low-lying dappled shade type woodland, swamps, the edges of lakes, rivers, streams where it can grow submerged in water (apx. 2" over the crown of the plant)
More: Will self-sow and also increase by rhizome, cheerful and easy-going. Larval host for the Common Buckeye, Junonia coenia, and the Baltimore Checkerspot, Euphydryas phaeton, both native to Maine. Hummingbirds will also visit the flowers. Has been used medicinally.
