Basics: zones 4-9, 12" x 12" (flowers up to 18"), part shade, tiny white flowers on thin wands held high above silvery-grey foliage with dark purple veining in early summer. Somewhat drought tolerant once established.

Common names: Coral Bells

Family: Saxifragaceae

Origin/Distribution: This hybrid was developed in 1996 at The Primrose Path in Pennsylvania by Charles and Martha Oliver, breeders of many Heuchera cultivars.

Habitat: The species is found in rocky woodland, particularly slopes and cliffs, and sometimes stream side, in shaded, moist, and humus-rich soils.

More: This Coral Bells has a beautiful, pale metallic-purple cast to its leaves that is accentuated by the dark etching of its veins. It is deer resistant. A good ingredient for a shady container, rock garden, or woodland edge.

Even more: Heucheras offer beautiful leaf texture, shape, and color for the front of a shady border. They are shallow-rooted and have a tendency to heave themselves out of the ground in the winter. Mulching lightly after the ground freezes will help prevent this. However, they are tough and easily repositioned come spring. Heuchera flowers and leaves are lovely in small posies and they are deer resistant. Heucheras can grow well in full sun given adequate moisture. Their leaf coloration responds to different light levels as well as temperature levels. Some leaves also have good fall color. The entire genus is native to North America except one species (H. sichotensis from far east Russia), however, Heucheras are not native to Maine. The root and leaves of the species have been used medicinally.
