Basics: zones 4-8, 8-15" x 12", sun to shade (both sun tolerant with enough moisture and very shade tolerant but will bloom less), the bright yellow flowers appear from late spring into summer over delicate ferny foliage. Although found in calcareous soils in its native habitat, is not picky as to pH. Does prefer it stony and well-drained with consistent moisture in the sunniest spots and no winter wet.

Common names: Yellow Fumitory, Yellow Corydalis, Hollowort, Yellow Larkspur, Rock Fumewort, Yellow False Bleeding Heart

Synonyms: Pseudofumaria lutea

Family: Fumariaceae (Papaveraceae)

Origin/Distribution: Found in the southern European Alps (Switzerland, Italy, Croatia)

Habitat: Occurs in rocky, calcareous, often shady foothills.

More: This is a long bloomer that likes a well-drained crevice and in its native habitat occurs in stone cracks and on cliffs and rocky shaded ledges. It is a strong self-seeder, but the attractive seedlings are easy to identify and dispense with if necessary. This plant is not advisable in a rock garden, but there are plenty of other well-drained shady places where it is just the thing. Try it with Bleeding Heart, Foamflower, Pulmonaria, Epimediums, Lady's Mantle, Hostas, and Ferns. Korydalis in Greek means "crested lark" and the flowers of Fumewort are reminiscent of tiny larks heads. Good under shrubs. May go dormant if too hot and dry. Toxic to horses.
