Origin/Distribution: Native to Maine, occurs in both eastern and western North America and is endangered in much of its range. Native range includes Labrador south to Newfoundland, New England, New Jersey, Delaware, and in mountainous regions down the Appalachian spine into Georgia, northwest into Indiana, Illinois, and Michigan.
Habitat: stream and riverside, edge of tidal marsh, floodplain, wet meadow, swamp edge, bog edge, damp open woodland and roadside ditch
More: Statuesque, late-bloomer for moist to wet spots This plant is long-flowering and a prodigious pollen producer. En masse the blooms are animated and a bit Dr. Seussian in nature. The leaves turn attractive shades of red and yellow in the fall. Has been used medicinally.
