Sizes available: 2 quart
Basics: zones 4-9, 12-16" x 15-18", part to full shade (morning sun okay in moist soils), flowers an orange-red fading to a yellower orange as the flowers age, can take dry shade, but also enjoys a moister aspect and dappled shade or morning sun
Common names: Barrenwort
Family: Berberidaceae
Origin/Distribution: This is a hybrid between E. alpinum and E. pinnatum subsp. colchicum. Most species are native to Asia.
Habitat: deciduous woodlands
More: Many varieties of Barrenwort have been in cultivation for over 150 years. A tried and true perennial for a shady border. Will gradually increase into a nice-size clump via rhizome. The foliage looks great all summer and provides welcome shade and protection to insects, small mammals, toads, and salamanders. Clumps can be divided in late summer. I have seen early season bees feeding on the flowers. Epimediums are attractive and adaptable additions to a variety of woodland settings.
