Sizes available: 2 quart
Basics: zones 4-8, 10" x 12", part to full shade (morning sun is ok with moist soil), bright yellow spring bloom, as the temps drop in the fall the foliage darkens to a purply-black with green veins. Can take dry shade, but also enjoys consistently moist woodland soils and dappled shade.
Common names: Barrenwort
Family: Berberidaceae
Origin/Distribution: This plant has been developed from a specimen collected by the U.S. National Arboretum in the Soviet Union in 1973. The breeder and epimedium expert Darrel Probst named it 'Thunderbolt' on account of the green veining through the dark leaf reminding him of lightning. Most species come from Asia.
Habitat: deciduous woodland
More: Many varieties of Barrenwort have been in cultivation for over 150 years. A tried and true perennial for a shady border. Will gradually increase into a nice-size clump via rhizome. Wonderful in combination with other woodlanders. The foliage looks great all summer and provides welcome shade and protection to insects and small mammals as well as toads and salamanders. Clumps can be divided in late summer. I have seen early season bees feeding on the flowers.
