Family: Ranunculaceae
Origin/Distribution: The species is native to central China, Nepal, northeast India, Tibet, Taiwan, and Myanmar. It has naturalized in Japan, Czechoslovakia, Ecuador, and Germany and was misidentified as a Japanese native, hence the common name.
Habitat: grassy slopes, stream edges, scrublands
More: The species has been cultivated in China since at least the 17th Century and probably a lot longer than that (Tang Dynasty, 7th-10th Century). It is a strong grower and will spread if happy, deer and rabbit resistant, salt tolerant, floriferous and a long bloomer, late season nectar source, good cut flower. This will take a couple of seasons to really show its stuff.
