Sizes available: TBD, coming in 2026
Basics: zones 4-9, 2-4' x 1.5-3', full sun to part shade, numerous, tubular, lavender flowers on tall, terminal spikes in mid to late summer, likes medium to dry, well-drained soils.
Common names: Anise Hyssop, Lavender Giant-hyssop
Family: Lamiaceae
Origin/Distribution: Native to northern Colorado to Wisconsin and further north into Canada.
Habitat: Likes drier, open spots on prairie, plain, field, and roadside. Also found in semi-shaded, dry upland forest and well-drained open woodland.
More: The leaves and roots have been used medicinally. Makes a good bouquet filler, supporting more diva-esque blooms. Its scented leaves can be used in potpourri as well as in teas, soups, and salads. I am not convinced that it is hardy to zone 4, but should seed around if happy and the seedlings are easy to identify. Anise Hyssop is very attractive to pollinators including hummingbirds. Deer resistant.
