Common names: Yarrow
Family: Asteraceae
Origin/Distribution: Common yarrow, Achillea millefolium, is native to temperate regions of North America (including Maine), Europe, and Asia, and has also naturalized extensively outside its circumboreal native range. Achillea filipendulina, Fern-leaf yarrow, is native to Central Asia, the Caucasus, Iran, and Afghanistan. 'Terracotta' is a cultivar developed by German nurseryman Ernst Pagels.
Habitat: meadows, fields, open woodlands, disturbed areas
More: This is my favorite yarrow cultivar because it ages so beautifully. It makes an excellent cut flower both fresh or dried. It is very attractive to numerous pollinators and has aromatic fern-like foliage. Deer resistant, rabbit resistant, and moderately salt tolerant. According to New Moon Nursery yarrow is a phytoremediator for Cadmium. A. millefolium has a long history of medicinal use. May cause dermatitis in some people.
